SEMA 2018 - Nobody famous is coming

Last year, I was excited to see and meet the Roadkill boys in person (I even noted I acted like a complete dunce in front of Mike Finnegan on a SEMA 2017 post here on Oppo). Due to Motor Trend on Demand throwing the series (and Dirt Every Day and HotRod Garage) behind a stupid paywall (as did RoosterTeeth and a few other content producers; totally different rant), I’m finding myself not stoked in seeing anyone “famous” in the industry this year.

The list feels dismal. Reallt REALLY Dismal.

I mean for goddess sakes, they got this guy appearing as a celebrity:

Okay waitwait, when was his show last aired........ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

And they have Jo Coddington.........the last time I saw American Hot Rod, it was back before 2008.

Okay, so let’s look at the list more thoroughly :

Jay Leno.......eh........Bill Goldberg......meh......theirs a ton of Discovery/Velocity “Stars” appearing......haven’t been watching Street Outlaws as of late......Richard Petty, not really a NASCAR fan and his lines will be long........YouTube/Instagram star are now getting top billing, wtf..............Ken Blockhead.......

......wait, John Hennessey is signing?

Ugh, at least I can fulfill one of my friends requests for Model Posters and Calendars......And go Thrifting. Savers and Goodwill on Tropicana.

Anyone know where I can find tons of VHS tapes for sale other than these two places in Vegas that is easily accessible by RTC?

From that list I recognize John D’Agostino, Charley Hutton, Peter Brock, Troy Trepanier, Emerson Fittipaldi, Gene Winfield, Jessi Combs and a few other along with the Discovery/Velocity/NBCSports people. I wouldn’t mind seeing Chip Foose or Dave Kindig but I don’t know if I’d deal with the crowds for it.

I still pay for MTOD. Freiberger wasn’t exactly stoked about the pay wall, but he didn’t make the call and subsequently got a lot of negative flak thrown his way because of what his overlords decided. Besides, speed parts and old cars aren’t free, and this is is livelihood . 10/10 would love to meet him and Finnegan, and 10/10 would act like a bumbling idiot.

On the topic of paywall.

Maybe an unpopular perspective, but pay and enjoy .

It sucks, I get it, I was a big opponent to it for a long time. I caved for MTOD when I was at home from surgery bored out of my mind. I spent whatever money $5 -6? it was for the month and got to binge on shows I wanted to watch, not be at the mercy of TV. That was when they didn’t have that much content, joining now you get access to years of monthly released shows, you could binge for the whatever free trial period and cancel the subscription if you felt so inclined and not pay anything.

They do  have the deals every once in a while, the one I bought a while back was $30 for the year. I’ve spent more than that going out to one movie and been way less satisfied. 

Every week they usually have at least one new episode from a show that I’m interested in whether that is engine masters, roadkill, hot rod garage, roadkill garage, or dirt every day, and if that doesn’t work they have older shows or races.

Also, Dennis Gage is pretty cool guy. He’s really into oddball and old-school cars. I always enjoyed his shows, never any fake drama, just cars and the typical product shilling (gotta pay bills, yo).

Also his mustache is pretty impressive.

Getting live coverage of semi-obscure racing series like Aussie Supercars, WEC, VLN, etc in addition to the original shows makes it worth it to me.

Hoonigan did it right. No ads, free content , just selling sweet t-shirts and whatnot that in turn sponsor awesome content.
